The Physiotherapy Department of St. Luke's Hospital consists of specialised physiotherapists of many years of experience, who offer their services to both hospitalised patients and outpatients, thanks to their continuous training and updated techniques.

The department's philosophy

Physiotherapy is a medical profession, the purpose of which is to promote health and optimal functioning of patients. Through the implementation of scientific principles and protocols, we are trying to help patients with acute or chronic motor dysfanction, through tested practices.

Physiotherapy is addressed to patients with diseases that may affect different parts of the human body. The following categories are indicative and aim at informing the reader about the fields and specialisations of Physiotherapy.

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy / Manual Therapy Techniques

Orthopaedic Therapy with Manipulations or Manual Therapy (MT) is a specialisation in the field of Physiotherapy, which deals with the treatment of diseases of the neuro-musculoskeletal system.

The main features of MT:

• The treatment is applied with the hands of the specialised physiotherapist (Manual Therapist) and includes gentle manipulations and mobilization of the joints, nerves, muscles, fascia and tendons.
• In addition to the passive techniques applied, emphasis is placed on the active participation of the patient. Thus, the beneficial properties of active exercise and retraining of motor control are used.
• The aim of treatment is not only to relieve the symptoms, but also to treat the causes.
  

Manual Therapy is addressed to:

• People with recent or chronic pain due to injury or dysfunction of the structures of the neuro-musculoskeletal system.
• People with musculoskeletal pain who have tried methods of classical physiotherapy and did not find a solution to their problem.
• People who complain of symptoms, such as headache, vertigo, stiffness, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, feeling of instability, etc.

Some examples of conditions treated with MT are:

• Cervical headache and vertigo
• Spinal pain syndromes (e.g. neck pain, back pain)
• Neck injury after car accidents (whiplash injury)
• Nerve entrapment syndromes (e.g. sciatica, cervical brachial syndrome)
• Shoulder and hip impingement syndrome, tendinopathy, epicondylitis
• Mild hip and knee osteoarthritis
• Restriction of joint movement or stiffness (e.g. frozen shoulder, degeneration of the spine)
• Musculoskeletal disorders of musicians (overuse syndrome, chest exit syndrome)
• Sports injuries (contusions, sprains)

Orthopaedic Physiotherapy

Through therapeutic exercise, kinesiotherapy techniques and the use of natural means, a number of orthopaedic patients are treated conservatively or postoperatively.

Some examples that require Orthopaedic Physiotherapy are the following:

Neurological Physiotherapy

The approach of neurological patients is always individualised, depending on the clinical picture and the needs of the patient and through renowned techniques (NDT, PNF).

• Traumatic brain injuries
• Spinal cord injuries
• Multiple sclerosis
• Parkinson 's disease
• Dementias with motor disorders
• Neuro-surgical patients (e.g. tumour removals, herniated discs, etc.)
• Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) lesions (e.g. peripheral nerve injuries, etc.)

Cardiac Surgery / Respiratory Physiotherapy

The extensive experience of the department's physiotherapists in cardiac surgery cases allows the treatment of patients both in the Intensive Care Unit and during their hospitalisation, through early mobilization and respiratory physiotherapy.

Postoperative Physiotherapy

After extensive surgeries, it is crucial to quickly mobilize, strengthen and train the movement and gait of patients

Lymphoedema

Certified therapists provide Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) to treat the following:

• Primary lymphoedema
• Postoperative lymphoedema (after mastectomy, prostatectomy, lymph node removal)
• Oedema of the extremities due to venous insufficiency
• Lipoedema
• General post-traumatic or postoperative oedemas
