Scoliosis Clinic

Scoliosis is a developmental disorder that causes distortion, turnand lateral inclination of the vertebrae as a result, the spine takes an S or C shape;

When scoliosis is large, the asymmetries it causes in the body are especially evident. But in the early stages it is possible not to be seen to the casual observer and escape, since it does not usually cause pain and small asymmetries are covered by the clothes worn by children, which are otherwise healthy.

Age of appearance
Today we distinguish scoliosis according to the age of occurrence in:

1. early onset scoliosis before the age of 10 years and
2. scoliosis of late onset, after the age of 10 years;

Scoliosis Early onset is the most severe form of scoliosisbecause it concerns the developing child skeleton. Because it occurs early, the deformity grows as the child grows skeletally, resulting in significant malformations. If the deformity worsens as the child develops, it affects with a domino mechanism, not only the shape of the spine, but also the configuration of the chest and the development of the lungs.

Treatment

Treatment of scoliosis includes:

tracking
guardian application
Physiotherapy
surgery

The goal is to stop evolution and maintain the balance of the body.

It should be understood that scoliosis is not cured in the classical sense of the term. On the one hand because many times it does not cause disease and on the other because there is, to date, no way to make the spine straight again while maintaining full mobility. The only way to straighten the spine is the operation performed by a specialized orthopedist (on the spine) with a special technique, but the mobility of a part of the spine is sacrificed. For this reason, scoliosis operations are done when necessary and always at the right time, so as to minimize the length of the spine to be anchored. Age is not a limitation. Surgery should be done early, when it seems that scoliosis cannot be stopped in any other way. The child will then have a normal life without any restrictions.

The guardians of scoliosis are special splints that are applied to the child's torso - which has a capable growth potential - to stop the progression of scoliosis. They do not fix the spine permanently and the result of their application is considered successful, by others when the scoliosis remains at its original size, and by others when it does not grow so large that it needs surgery. By one criterion or another, the success of the guardian reaches 80%, as long as the child agrees to wear it 23 hours a day.
Finally, an important part in dealing with the progression of scoliosis has been shown to be physical therapy with the Scroth method. Physiotherapy sessions, combined with the right guardian application, seem to have impressive results.

Patients treated in our clinic

A 13-year-old girl came to our clinic for a spinal check due to a scapula protrusion that her mother noticed.

During clinical and imaging control it is stimulated with scoliosis. Due to her residual bone growth it was decided to use a guardian in conjunction with a specialized physiotherapy program.

3 years later, and while the guardian has already been removed for a year, our patient, having now completed her bone growth, has remained in the same degree of scoliosis without discomfort achieving the maximum possible result.

A 12-year-old girl, pre-menstruating, came to our Clinic with a symptomatic deformity of the spine.

During clinical and imaging tests, he was diagnosed with 49-degree scoliosis. Due to the very large residual bone growth it was decided to use a guardian in conjunction with a specialized physiotherapeutic program Schroth.

5 years later with the patient fully complying with the manner/duration of use of the guardian and having now completed its bone growth the scoliosis was measured at 22 degrees, an amazing result of hard work, perseverance and patience both on our part but above all on the part of the patient.

Girl 12 years old, came to our clinic with asymptomatic deformity of the spine.

During the clinical and imaging test, he was diagnosed with 28 & 23 degree double arc scoliosis. Due to the very large residual bone growth it was decided to use a guardian in conjunction with a specialized physiotherapeutic program Schroth.

3 years later, having completed her bone growth, her scoliosis was measured at 14 and 22 degrees respectively, achieving the goal that we had set from the beginning together with her family.
