Endometrial cancer: Laparoscopic treatment with the IMAGE1 S™ Rubina laparoscopic system

The "Agios Loukas" Clinic is a pioneer in the treatment of gynecological cancer. For the first time in Greece, a patient with endometrial cancer (uterine cancer) underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy with the IMAGE1 S™ Rubina laparoscopic system.

Endometrial cancer is the most common gynaecological malignancy and in most cases it is diagnosed at an early stage. Laparoscopic treatment with the IMAGE1 S™ Rubina laparoscopic system allows, with the use of ICG dye, the identification and removal of the sentinel lymph node. The same method is used in incipient cervical cancer.

The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to receive lymph from the tumour and where the cancer cells gather. When it is found and examined by rapid biopsy and is negative, extensive lymphadenectomy, i.e. removal of all the pelvic lymph nodes, is not required. In this way, an excellent oncological outcome is ensured, reducing the necessary surgical time and minimising the possibility of complications. Furthermore, the days of hospitalisation in the clinic are reduced, as well as the cost for the patient.

It should be noted, however, that the sentinel lymph node is not visible to the human eye and is therefore impossible to remove in open surgery or with a simple laparoscopic system. However, with the injection of the special ICG dye, the lymph node becomes easily distinguishable, during surgery, as it is coloured green, and is removed entirely.

This method offers absolute oncological safety with much lower morbidity for our patients (less pain, less bleeding).

In "Agios Loukas" this technique is now applied to many patients with impressive results.
