Treatment of interstitial lung diseases depends on the underlying cause. It is based on anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory (e.g. steroids) and anti-scar drugs (anti-fibrotic drugs). As the disease progresses, oxygen and lung function restoration programmes may be required. Despite treatment, some forms of interstitial lung disease progressively worsen and require a lung transplant.
George Margaritopoulos is a Reader in Interstitial Lung Diseases at the University Pulmonary Clinic "G. Papanikolaou", as well as at the Aristotle University. He is an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College Medical School, London, UK. He has also worked as a Consultant at the largest reference centre for Intermediate Diseases in Europe (Royal Brompton Hospital, London, UK), as well as at the Interstitial Lung Diseases Unit at Manchester University Hospital. For 3 years he worked as Director of the Interstitial Lung Diseases Unit at London North West University Hospital.
