Strengthening of the immune system with parallel weight loss

As the new SARS-CoV-2 virus spreads worldwide, the question arises "What can I do nutritionally to boost my immune system?" According to the position papers of the Panhellenic Association of Dietitians and Nutritionists and the British Dietetic Association, unfortunately there is no specific food or dietary supplement that boosts the immune system.

However, a healthy and balanced diet that meets the body's needs for micronutrients and macronutrients, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising help to protect the body.

Some of the micronutrients that play an important role in the good condition of the immune system are listed in the table below.

Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy immune system:

  • Balanced diet!
  • Maintaining Healthy Weight
  • Avoid intense, fast and depriving diets, which weaken the body's defences
  • Slight reduction in quantities
  • Choice of food, instead of supplements
  • Measure, Variety, Balance
  • Intake of 3-5 servings of fruit and vegetables daily
  • Good level of hygiene in the kitchen and hands
  • Adequate sleep: 7-9 hours of nightly sleep (CDC: Center of Disease Control)
  • Exercise and Movement: ≥ 150min/week (WHO)
  • Low stress
