Laparoscopic surgery is one of the most important developments in general surgery. The word laparoscopy is derived from the words "lapara" meaning abdomen and "scopo" meaning to see. It is a minimally invasive surgical technique and an alternative way of performing many surgical procedures.
On the one hand, there is open surgery, in which large incisions are made so that the patient's organs can be seen directly. On the other hand, in laparoscopy, the surgeon performs the surgery through small incisions and can see the patient's internal organs through a monitor.
More specifically, in laparoscopic surgery, a small incision is made in the area of the navel, through which a special telescope (laparoscope) is inserted into the abdomen. In this way, the internal organs can be seen through a video camera and TV screen (diagnostic laparoscopy). At the same time, two or three other small incisions (5-10 mm) are made to insert surgical instruments into the abdomen to perform the necessary surgical operations (invasive laparoscopy).
