Epilepsy Surgery
Why choose us?

With many years of experience and with the contribution of distinguished neurosurgeons, both in Greece and abroad, the department is a specialized center for the surgical treatment of epilepsy, observing all modern medical protocols and using state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. Our goal is to improve the patient's quality of life by stopping or reducing seizures and maintaining all brain functions.

The Epilepsy Center of the Clinic "AGIOS LOUKAS" has a long experience in the treatment of epilepsy.

Already in 2002 it began its action with selected incidents. Much more systematic began the operations for the surgery of epilepsy in the Clinic since 2006, after the inclusion in the staff of the Clinic of Neurosurgeon Dr. Vasileios Zountsa. Our experience exceeds 160 -170 cases, with excellent results in 85% of them.

The infrastructure and expertise we have at the Centre is that of a quaternary - modern and for international standards a modern epilepsy centre. It includes capabilities for long-term video encephalographic recordings, both with extracranial and intracranial electrodes, modern imaging, with brain MRI, functional MRI, advanced methods of signal analysis with decisive participation of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Signal Analysis from the National Technical University of Athens.

Surgical treatment of epilepsy is indicated for people whose seizures are not controlled by drugs. The goal is to improve the quality of life of the patient, permanently stopping or significantly reducing the frequency and / or severity of seizures. Surgery is performed by a specialist neurosurgeon.

What are the criteria for the surgical treatment of epilepsy?

The surgical treatment of epilepsy is addressed to:

Types of surgeries

There are three main types of surgery to treat epilepsy.

Temporal lobe surgery

This is the most common type of neurosurgery for people with temporal lobe epilepsy and may include "lobectomy" or selective tonsillo-hippocampalectomy. With this method, the brain tissue in the temporal lobes that causes the seizures is removed.

Surgery outside the temporal lobe

In this type of surgery, the brain tissue that causes seizures is located in other parts of the brain, for example, in the occipital, parietal or frontal lobe. During surgery, this tissue is removed.

Lesinectomy

This surgery involves the removal of tumors, abscesses or other damage to the brain that causes seizures.

The type of surgery depends on the type of seizures and their initial focus. The goal is to remove the entire area of brain tissue that causes the seizures, without causing loss of brain function.

People in need of surgical treatment of epilepsy undergo extensive testing to identify the focus of seizures and ensure that removing this area of the brain will not affect their speech, mobility or quality of life.

Brain mapping or electrocorticography

Brain mapping is a diagnostic procedure often necessary if the focus of seizures is located near important functional areas or if the exact location of the focus remains unclear despite standard diagnostic tests.

Making the decision

The multidisciplinary team of the Clinic, which specializes in the treatment of epilepsy, thoroughly examines all the results of the diagnostic tests performed, in order to decide whether surgery is the best treatment option. The operation is performed only if there is a joint decision that overcomes the chances of complications and that may significantly improve the outcome of the disease.
